Age Of Your Roof
How old is your existing roof? Most roofing experts will agree that a shingle roof can last between 20 to 25 years. Whether you need a new roof or not also depends if it is a new layer of shingles or if it’s multiple layers of shingles on top of each other then it’s more likely that your roof is over 20 to 25 years old which means you most likely need a new roof.
The Shape Of Your Shingles
If your shingles are starting to curl and buckle, then the chances are that you need a new roof at that point. Look at the slope of your roof in the direct sunlight and if you notice that the shingles are curling upwards and that they are also losing their granules then it’s most likely that your shingles need to be replaced but you might also have an underlying issue as well. This means that your roof might be defective. In this case, if you are I’m sure, then the best way would be to have a professional roofer look at it inside of your attic and also from the top.
Roof valleys are the point where two roofs meet each other and create a crease where the water and snow will flow down off of the roof and into the gutters. If you notice any shingles falling out of this specific area of your roof, then you most likely will need a new roof. This is because if this area of your roof is compromised then you will experience a leaky roof.
This one is pretty simple. Obviously if you see that your shingles tabs are just falling off of your roof, then there is most likely an underlying issue that needs to be fixed. This most definitely means you need a new roof. Again, if you aren’t sure your roof needs to be replaced, then definitely consult with a professional roofer.
Do you have a chimney in your roof? if so it is important to make sure that it is not leaking from that area. If you also need to replace the cement around a chimney frequently, then it would be a good idea to get a metal chimney flashing. Unfortunately, if there is already damage I’m leaking from this area then you will need to replace the roof completely. Once you have, just make sure to use a metal chimney flashing which will extend the life of your new roof.
Take a look in your gutters to see if you see any dark specks of your shingle granules. This is a clear sign that your roof life is coming to an end. You will clearly see these in your gutters if your roof needs replacing.
Daylight Coming In
Check your attic to see if there is any day like coming into the house and also look for moisture. Then once you are on the roof if you notice that it feels like you are walking on a spongy bouncy trampoline, then your roof will need replacement.
What To Do Next
If your roof is coming up with any of these symptoms mentioned above, then the right thing to do would be to replace your roof. If this is not something you’ve learned to do or are qualified to do, then it would be a good idea to call in a professional at that time. The professional roofer can also assure you that the only thing you can do now is to replace the roof so it doesn’t cause any further damage to your home. Now, if you procrastinate on fixing the damage, then you will see that it is just damaging your house and far beyond repair. Call someone as soon as you notice one of these symptoms and prevent further damage to be done on your house.
