Decorating in Just Minutes

Home decorating/ Fall

Fall is here and in most of the country that involves a change in temperature, outdoor activities and the beginnings of the holiday season. Most of us don’t have time for a total home transformation. However, with just a few items added to your home, you can bring the fall outdoor spirit into your living space.

You don’t have to decorate your home with pumpkins or flying bats to bring the fall season indoors. Any natural thing from chrysanthemums and asters to gourds, leaves or bowls of nuts can give your home a lift. Since the fall flowers come in every shade imaginable you can chose between the bright yellows and oranges or the softer plums, lavenders and burgundies. There’s nothing better for prolonging the summer. If you don’t want to care for flowers, try dried grasses or hydrangeas or even the humble straw flowers. They all add a temporary lift to your decor.

For those with allergies, bringing live or dried plants into the home can be a problem. Take a trip to your local garden center and look at the colors and then go off to your favourite accessory stores and buy pillows and throws that will bring those colors inside. You’ll appreciate their warmth and color as the days darken and the temperatures drop.

Spring Decorating Ideas

Spring is here and so are the colors of spring and summer. It’s always nice to bring some of these colors into our homes to brighten things for the warmer season. This can be done without doing a major make over if you just apply a few simple rules.

Be aware that natural light in spring and summer is not only more abundant, it is different in quality. Colors that might look harsh or garish in the colder months when light is cooler, come alive in the brighter light of summer. When mixing the summer shades in with your existing rooms the most important thing is to use your eyes first. Do you have clear strong blues, blacks, reds or yellows in your home? Do you have muted or faded colors; soft beiges, golds and browns, sage greens and plums?

If you have the clear colors you can accent with white, red, turquoise, bright yellow, lime green marine blue, whichever colors complement your color scheme. Stay away from the softer summer shades, they will fade with the stronger light and disappear in your brightly colored room. If your rooms are the more subdued and softer shades, go with light coral, buttery yellow, aqua, lavender and celadon.

There is a good selection of colors this year, available in sheer draperies, curtains, pillows, accessories and accent pieces and will blend with your existing color scheme. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on temporary items to spruce up your rooms, you can enjoy hunting for them at the outdoor flea markets and yard sales which abound this time of year.

Autumn Decorating Ideas

Use these 3 easy autumn decorating ideas to add curb appeal and showcase autumn colors on our porch. No matter its size, any porch looks great when decorated for the season. In fact, these ideas can add the “wow” factor to your home and will last throughout the season.

Mum’s the Word. This is a real easy way to add immediate color to any porch. Often times we do not use enough chrysanthemums to make an impression. This year, use multiple groupings along on and around your porch.
Take care to not present a tripping hazard, but if your porch staircase is sufficiently wide, use potted mums on each side of the steps. If your stairs won’t safely accommodate that arrangement you can place them at the top and bottom of the staircase.

Not only is placement important, choosing the right color or colors is as important as well. Many use one predominant color throughout their decorating scheme. There is nothing quite like seeing mass groupings of yellow or gold mums. Still others prefer to mix and match colors to create interesting arrangements as well.

Paint the Pots. First, remove the stickers from the pots. It really detracts from your plant arrangements to look down and see the bar codes on the pots. Second, consider painting them to complement or contrast with the colors of your mums.
Most pots are black which can appropriate. However, you don’t have to limit yourself to basic black. In fact, gold, yellow, and other autumn colors will enhance the look of your arrangements. Pots do not have to be all one color either. You can have fun creating your own unique design. Spray paints made just for this purpose are readily available.

Hang a Decorative Flag. Hanging a flag not only adds color and flair to your porch but it is also eye-catching to passers-by. They come in a variety of colors and scenes so selecting one to fit your style should be easy. You might also want to color coordinate the flag with your mums. Stretching your color scheme across your porch on various items will give it a together look.

These 3 easy autumn decorating ideas are quick to do and will add immediate curb appeal. They will last throughout the season and be delightful to all who pass by. It is a colorful season and one which you can use your porch as your palette as you celebrate this special time of year.
